Projects

Honours Project” September 2010-April 2011:

I have recently completed my honours project, which focuses on the intelligent design, creation and implementation of re-usable and modular art assets for use in level design in modern computer games. I am designing and constructing the assets myself in Maya before assembling and scripting the environments using the Unreal Engine.

Weatherman” (Dare to be Digital 2010) June-August 2010:

I joined a team with the role of providing gameplay and environment concepts and designs during the pre-production phase, and to work as a full time level designer and environment artist during the course of the competition. My game concept managed to win us a place in the competition, and our final game received a great deal of very positive feedback from the judges and the general public.

Shelter” January 2010-ongoing:

Shelter is a solo project I am currently working on where I am attempting to create an environment using the Unreal Development Kit and, using scripting via unreal script, give the impression that the environment is haunted. All assets are being created from scratch by myself as well as all the scripting and interaction involved.

Aftermath” September-April 2010:

Aftermath is a student project that I took part in where I was tasked with creating a full 3D game environment for use in a third person action adventure. The game was built using “Microsoft’s XNA” and I had the interesting task of taking a real world building (a hospital) and, through creative design and modification, converting it into a playable and fun environment for the player to experience.

The Inevitable Death of Captain Oblivious” January-May 2009:

For my second year project I was tasked with managing and organising a group of artists to create a proof of concept demo for a side scrolling platforming game using “Adobe Flash”. I took on many roles in this project, providing the initial game concept, all the scripting in the game and managing/team leading of the project.

Relevant Extra Curricular Experiences

  • Gameplay and level design on a number of unpublished student games on iOS and Facebook
  • Running voluntary workshops at university to help students learn how to use and develop their skills in Unreal
  • Guest lecturer on game design and team leading at Abertay University
  • Recruitment speaker and “Open-Day” presenter for Abertay University
  • Long distance mentorship and management advice, for masters students studying Games Technology in Canada, helping them to create game prototypes using Unreal
  • Budget management for the 2011 Abertay Student Showcase
  • Games Design and Production Management Class Representative 4 years running.

About Myself

I am a passionate, determined and hard working person, who works well in both a team and by myself. I am always trying to improve my skills and build upon my experience in the different areas of game creation, especially in terms of my art and design skills. I’ve always had excellent time keeping and communication skills and I love nothing more than working in a creative environment. I have been told a number of times that I am a very strong public speaker and confident team leader, while I have always personally see myself as simply a problem solver.

I have always been a huge fan of computer games especially RPGs, third person action /adventure games, first person shooters and MMOs and I spend a great deal of time playing and critically analysing whatever games I can get my hands on. I also enjoy tabletop wargames and pen and paper RPGs. In my spare time I can usually be found either over-analysing games and films or spending time at the gym.
